SIUE MASTERS in LITERACY COURSES

During the month of June, I took two courses towards my Masters' degree. One was a practicuum where I was tutoring a child going into 4th grade in reading and writing, so on a daily basis I had to come up with a lesson plan to teach him for 75 minutes a day. I thought this was going to be a challenge, but if you talk a little bit about what he did the night before and you plan extensively you sometimes ran into having too much work to do, but it was a fun and unique experience dealing with a student that is younger than the group I normally work with on a daily basis.
The other course I took was an Action Research class where I had to choose a topic to study previous researchers and their work to incorporate into my class somehow. I chose to do it on using communication (writing, speaking, listening) in my 8th grade math class. I wanted to know more about whether or not this would help students learn and use the mathematical vocabulary more. This was a very time consuming class because after we met everyday in June I was still working on the project until July 31st. However, I do have a lot of ideas to try with my new 8th graders in their Pre-Algebra class this year to see how well it works.
The hardwork and time that I put into the classes paid off because last week before I started school I was able to see my transcript with my grades on it. I received two more A's so I am excited because so far with all of my Masters' courses I have a 4.0 on a 4.0 scale.
I only have 3 more classes to take, and even more exciting news is that I will have my Masters' degree at the end of the summer 2010 semester, so sometime in the beginning of August next year. Woo Hoo!!!
